Everything flying into Malta comes through Malta International Airport (MLA) at Luqa, the only commercial airport on the archipelago and about 6 kilometres south of Valletta. It moves a remarkable number of people for such a small place, over 7 million passengers a year in the busy seasons, with Air Malta, Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air among the carriers. Because the island is only 27 kilometres end to end, choosing Malta airport hotels barely affects your travel time, and hotels near Malta Airport are within half an hour of most of the country. English being an official language makes the whole thing especially easy for British and Irish visitors.
Put simply, almost any bed on the island is 30 to 45 minutes from the terminal.
Hotels near the airport
The Luqa and Marsa areas are the obvious base for a quick turnaround, while the resort strips at Sliema, St Julian's and Mellieħa work better for a holiday. The sister island of Gozo, a 25-minute ferry away, gives you a slower, more rural alternative.
