Stansted Layover Guide

London Stansted Airport (STN)

Things to Do at Stansted Airport During a Layover

Stansted is a compact budget-carrier hub. Airside options are functional rather than extensive. For anything beyond eating and shopping, you need at least four hours and a willingness to leave the terminal.

What is Stansted like?

Stansted has a single Stansted-designed terminal building by Norman Foster. The landside and airside halves are divided by security. Airside has the main duty-free concourse, food outlets and a pair of lounges. It is efficient and modern but compact compared to Gatwick or Heathrow.

Compact and efficient
Single-level airside concourse makes navigation simple. Gates fan out from the central shopping area.

Duty free and retail
World Duty Free is the centrepiece airside. A good range of fashion, beauty and food shops surrounds it.

Cambridge nearby
Cambridge city centre is 30 minutes by taxi or Stansted Express. A viable option if you have four or more hours.

Free Wi-Fi
Stansted provides free unlimited Wi-Fi airside. Sign up on first connection; no time cap or registration wall after that.

Mostly budget carriers
Ryanair and easyJet dominate. No full-service airline lounges airside; the two lounges are Priority Pass accessible.

Good gate connections
Even the furthest gates are reachable on foot in under 15 minutes from the main airside concourse.

Frequently asked questions
Can I leave the terminal during a Stansted layover?
Yes, if your layover is long enough. Cambridge is 30 minutes by train from the station directly below the terminal. London is 47 to 55 minutes. Allow at least 90 minutes before your next flight for the return journey, queuing and security. Do not attempt a city trip on a layover under four hours.
Is there a lounge at Stansted I can pay to use?
Yes. The Escape Lounge and iLounge both accept walk-up payment. The Escape Lounge is the larger and better equipped of the two with a hot food buffet and bar. Both also accept Priority Pass, Lounge Key and similar card memberships.
How long does security take at Stansted?
Security at Stansted has a reputation for variable queue times. At peak slots such as Friday mornings and Sunday evenings, allow up to 45 minutes. Off-peak times are much quicker. The airport has introduced fast-track lanes which can be booked in advance through the airport website.
Is there food airside at Stansted?
Yes. Airside has a good range including Pret a Manger, Caffe Nero, Wetherspoons, Zizzi, Itsu and several grab-and-go outlets. Options are spread along the main concourse close to the central shopping area. The Wetherspoons is a popular budget option for a sit-down meal.
Can I sleep at Stansted Airport?
The terminal remains open overnight but has limited comfortable seating. The Radisson Blu is directly connected to the terminal and offers rooms for short overnight stays. This is the most comfortable option for early morning departures or late-night arrivals.
