Common questions
Can I go into London on a 4-hour layover at Gatwick?

It is tight but possible. The Gatwick Express takes 30 minutes to Victoria. You would have around 90 minutes in London before needing to head back to allow time for the return train and security. A walk along the Embankment from Victoria is realistic. Borough Market or Covent Garden requires moving quickly.

If you are connecting through Gatwick rather than departing, confirm whether you need to re-clear security and immigration before committing to leaving the airport.

Is Brighton worth it for a layover?

Yes, for anything over 5 hours. The train from Gatwick to Brighton takes about 30 minutes. The Lanes and the seafront are within walking distance of the station. You need at least 2 to 3 hours there to make the trip worthwhile, which means you need a 6-hour layover minimum to allow time for travel and security.

Which terminal has better facilities for a long wait?

Both terminals have similar facilities including lounges, food options and retail. South Terminal has Sofitel hotel directly connected. North Terminal has the same lounge options. If your flight departs from one terminal, stay in that terminal — the inter-terminal transit adds time.

Do I need a visa to leave Gatwick during a layover?

UK immigration rules apply. Many nationalities require a visa to enter the UK even for a short visit. Check UK Visas and Immigration guidance at gov.uk before making any plan to leave the airport.
