Things to Do at Milan Malpensa During a Layover

MXP is 50km from Milan. The Malpensa Express takes 40 minutes to Cadorna and 52 minutes to Centrale. Add a 45-60 min security buffer: any city visit needs at least 5 hours total.

Transport from Milan Malpensa

The Malpensa Express is the most reliable option. T2 passengers (easyJet, Wizz Air) must take the free inter-terminal shuttle to T1 before boarding the train. There is no direct metro connection to MXP.

Option Destination Time Notes
Malpensa Express Milano Cadorna or Milano Centrale 40 / 52 min Every 30 min. EUR 13 one-way. Two routes: Cadorna (city west, near Castello) and Centrale (main station). Best option for reliability.
Coach (FlixBus, Terravision, Autostradale) Milano Centrale or Foro Buonaparte 50-75 min Traffic-dependent. EUR 8-10 one-way. Every 30 min approx. Cheaper but less reliable timing.
Taxi Milan city centre 50-60 min Official fixed fare approximately EUR 95-110. Available 24h. Only practical for groups splitting the cost.

At the airport
Sala Montale, Monteverdi or Pergolesi — all three T1 airside lounges accept Priority Pass (complimentary) or walk-in. Montale has the best finish. Good food, bar, showers. Use whichever is closest to your gate.

Italian coffee culture — an espresso, cornetto and Aperol Spritz at the terminal bar is genuinely good. Coffee quality at Italian airport bars tends to be higher than most European equivalents.

Duty-free: Panettone, grappa, Italian fashion accessories, Ferrero Rocher. Good range of Italian food gifts in the terminal shops.

Nearby option: Castello Visconti
Castello Visconti di San Vito in Somma Lombardo is 5km from MXP (short taxi). A furnished 15th-century Visconti family castle with guided tours of period rooms and courtyards. Useful if you want something outside the terminal without going to Milan. Check opening times before travel.

Solo Sala Montale walk-in fee is reasonable for a short T1 layover. Priority Pass covers it for free. All three lounges are post-security in T1.

Castello Sforzesco (5-6h only)
0:00
Malpensa Express to Cadorna (40 min).

0:45
Castello Sforzesco — 5-min walk from Cadorna. 15th-century Sforza fortress and museum complex. The courtyard is free to enter. Explore the exterior, tower and Parco Sempione (the park directly behind the castle).

2:00
Coffee on Corso Magenta — the main street near Cadorna, lined with cafes and restaurants. A more local feel than the tourist centre.

4:00
Malpensa Express back from Cadorna. Allow 90 min airport buffer from departure.

Timing note
Under 5 hours does not work for a city visit. The train is 40 minutes each way. Add a 45-60 min pre-flight buffer and you have less than 1.5 hours in the city on a 4h layover. Cadorna is the right station for short visits as it cuts 12 minutes off the Centrale route.

Do not attempt the Duomo on a 3-6h layover. It requires a metro from Cadorna (5 min) or a 20-min walk and tightens the timing significantly.

Solo Castello Sforzesco exterior and Parco Sempione is a 1-2h circuit. Add coffee on Corso Magenta. Return with 90 min to spare.
Couple Castello exterior plus a sit-down lunch on Corso Magenta. Do not rush — missing the train adds 30 min to your return.

Common questions
How far is Milan from Malpensa Airport?

Approximately 50km. The Malpensa Express takes 40 minutes to Milano Cadorna and 52 minutes to Milano Centrale. Allow at least 2.5 hours for the round trip alone, before adding security buffer and any city time. A city visit is only realistic with 5 hours or more.

Should I go to Cadorna or Centrale?

Cadorna for shorter layovers. It is 12 minutes faster than Centrale and is walking distance from Castello Sforzesco, Brera and Corso Magenta. Centrale is the main city interchange and connects to the Navigli and south Milan — better for full-day visits. Metro M1 runs from Cadorna to the Duomo in 5 minutes if you need to reach the centre.

Can I book Leonardo’s Last Supper for a layover?

Yes, but it requires advance planning. Tickets sell out weeks ahead in high season at vivaticket.com. The visiting slot is 15 minutes. Santa Maria delle Grazie is a 20-minute walk from Cadorna. It is only realistic for a 9h+ layover given travel time from MXP and the strict timed entry.

Are the T1 lounges accessible from T2?

Not straightforwardly. The three Sala lounges are in T1 airside, past security. T2 passengers using easyJet or Wizz would need to travel to T1 and clear security there to access them. T2 has its own limited landside facilities but no Priority Pass lounge.
