Split Airport (SPU), officially Resnik Airport, is Croatia's second busiest and the main way into the Dalmatian coast. It sits about 25 kilometres northwest of Split near Kaštela, and most of its flights are seasonal, peaking from May to October. From here you're well placed for the islands of Brač, Hvar, Vis, and Korčula, and for Diocletian's Palace, the UNESCO-listed Roman heart of the city. Hotels near Split Airport suit early arrivals and late departures alike.
Airport buses run to the Split Bus Terminal by the harbour in about 30 minutes, with taxis and rental cars at the terminal.

The Kaštela and Trogir areas are handy for awkward flight times. Trogir is the standout: the UNESCO-listed island town is only 5 minutes from the airport, which makes for an atmospheric base right next to the terminal.
