Sofia Airport (SOF) is Bulgaria's busiest international airport and sits about 10 kilometres east of the capital. It runs European routes year-round, with a steady flow from the Bulgarian diaspora and a growing tourist trade drawn to a city that's both cheap and full of history. Roman ruins, Orthodox monasteries, late-night bars, and the Vitosha mountain right on the edge of town: Sofia rewards a city break. Hotels near Sofia Airport are good value and well placed for both the terminal and the centre.
One thing sets Sofia apart from most Balkan airports: Metro Line 1 runs straight from the terminal into the centre in around 30 minutes. Buses and taxis are there too.
