The 4 Provinces of Ireland

Ireland has four provinces: Connacht in the west, Leinster in the east, Munster in the south and Ulster in the north provinces of Ireland.

Connacht in the west

The province of Connacht is located in the west of Ireland. The name “Connacht” is derived from the word “Connachta” which means the descendants of Conn. There are many interesting places to visit in this region such as Kylemore Abbey and Cong Abbey which were founded by Benedictine Monks.

The Shannon River divides the province from Ulster. The landscape varies from central plains to hills, mountains, and lakes. Connacht contains some very interesting attractions which include the Cliffs of Moher, Galway Bay Castle, Kylemore Abbey and Round Tower, Lough Corrib and Lough Mask Lakes.

The province of Connacht consists of 5 counties: Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon.

Leinster in the east

Leinster is one of the provinces of Ireland, situated in the southeast and east of Ireland. The province comprises the ancient Kingdoms of Meath, Leinster and Osraige. Leinster, Old Irish Laigin, the southeastern province of Ireland. It comprises the counties of Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Offaly, Longford, Louth, Meath, Laois, Westmeath, Wexford, and Wicklow.

Munster in the south

The province of Munster is located in the south-west of Ireland and is made up of six counties: Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford. Munster has a long and rich history and was home to many famous Irish figures such as: Brian Boru, Daniel O’Connell and Robert Emmet.

It is the third most populated provinces of Ireland with 2 million people living there. The town of Munster in County Kerry is famous for its seafood and traditional Irish delicacies.

Ulster in the north

The Ulster province is one of the four provinces of Ireland. It is the northeast province of Ireland. Ulster includes 9 counties: Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Donegal, Down, Derry (formerly Londonderry), Fermanagh, Monaghan and Tyrone.

Ulster provinces includes both Republic of Ireland and Norther Ireland counties. Norther Ireland counties includes Antrim, Armagh, Down, Derry (formerly Londonderry), Fermanagh and Tyrone.

The name “Ulster” comes from the Irish word “úladh”, meaning “southern half”. It has an area of 18,898 square kilometres (7,472 square miles), making it the largest province in Ireland.
